FFRANCONSTEIN is an album that doesn't currently exist. But with your help, it will. As well as collaborating with musicians, I want to work with artists, writers, poets, photographers, video and film makers, graphic artists, craftspeople, and (especially) people who insist they're not creative. Here's how it works:
1. You contribute £10 to the project
2. We collaborate
3. I send you a copy of the completed album, ETA 2010
This is what you'll get for your money:
1. Welcome pack - CD
of your choice, badge, postcard, blank CD to aid collaboration,
and other surprises.
2. Free downloads - links to three
albums, as well as a zipfile of random sounds/images/text to
aid collaboration.
3. Priority contact - with me via email, My Faceberk and whatever social networking sites that happen to be flavour of the month at the time.
4. Hand-made personalised copy of the finished album on CD. ETA Summer 2010.
5. Other stuff! - of a special, secretive and sometimes random nature.
What's all this about then?
The idea is to create a two way dialogue between you and me. Ideally, I will feed off your creative vibes and together we will create a thing of great beauty. The contact between us might occur in a number of ways - I might throw out an mp3 of something I'm working on, and you might comment on it. You might even remix it, or send me back an mp3 file containing you drumming on the kitchen table, or the call of the curlew. You might inspire me to go in a certain musical direction through turning me on to a piece of music or art or literature. You might send me some super dope obscure funk breaks that you think I could make use of. We might get together in actual real life and 'jam', man. You might produce visual ideas or suggest song titles. You see where I'm going with this? Basically, anything goes.
The main way that I will communicate with you is through the Ffranconstein blog. The blog will be regularly updated with news on how things are going, what I'm up to, who I've fallen out with, triumphs and disasters. I will use the blog to post up snippets of music and video as I go along, and will actively seek out your views and ideas on things.
Has anyone done this before?
I don't think so, no. As far as I know, nobody has ever before attempted to do it in this exact way. So this is a unique project.
Do you know beforehand how it will pan out?
I've absolutely no idea what will happen. It might be a total disaster, but hopefully not. I begin with a blank slate. I haven't written anything, and i have no idea what it will end up sounding like.
What's this I hear about an, ahem, 'contribution'?
You don't have to give me any money - the blog is public and anyone can access it and follow my adventures. I will however be actively seeking a small financial contribution - £10 - and for this, you will receive a limited edition handmade personalised copy of the finished album, as well as lots of other special things that those who aren't financially contributing won't get. I don't expect to be able to fully fund Ffranconstein this way, but I do hope it will allow me more freedom to pursue certain ideas and trains of thought that I previously would not have had the resources to follow.
Those who are supporting me financially are more likely get my collaborative attention on a regular basis. Another reason for requesting a contribution is that you're more likely to participate and less likely to drift away if you have something invested in the project.
Do I have to do this 'collaboration' thing with you? It sounds taxing
No, not at all. But I would still value your financial contribution irrespective of whether you choose to actively participate or not. I imagine that a substantial proportion of people who financially contribute to the project will be happy to follow progress on Ffranconstein from the outside via the blog.
Do you have to take onboard everything I say?
No, I am perfect liberty to completely ignore your ideas or feedback. This is likely to happen if you have no useful ideas, I don't like you, or you're annoying me. But that won't happen as you're such a nice person. The creative process is not going to be democratic - i'm far too much of a control freak for that - but i do genuinely want to be affected and influenced by your thoughts, reactions and ideas. I want a little part of you to be present on the final album.
Sounds great! Where do I send my money?
Send me your contribution now using Paypal - a 100% secure and trusted payment system (Paypal also accept all major credit and debit cards). On receipt of your £10, I will send you a special introductory CD and package of goodies as a welcome aboard. There will also be other surprises along the way, and when the album is completed you will receive your personalised hand-designed copy of Ffranconstein.
